Microsoft Eyes Massive Data Center Expansion to Meet Cloud Demand
Microsoft (MSFT) is planning to significantly expand its global data center capacity from approximately 12 gigawatts to over 38 gigawatts by 2032, according to sources familiar with the company's plans. This expansion is expected to be driven by growing demand for cloud services, particularly Azure and AI-specific chips.
Currently, only about 2 gigawatts of Microsoft's capacity is dedicated to AI-specific chips, but this share is anticipated to grow to roughly one-third of the total capacity by 2032. Microsoft has not publicly confirmed this target in any official filing or statement.
The company's strong cloud demand and commercial backlog provide a solid foundation for its aggressive infrastructure expansion. Azure revenue increased by 43% year-over-year in fiscal Q4, while Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $59.3 billion for the quarter and $214.4 billion for fiscal 2026.
However, Microsoft must navigate significant capital commitments, power availability issues, and growing regulatory resistance to execute its roadmap. The company's data center expansion requires enormous investments, with over $50 billion of capital expenditures expected in fiscal Q1 2027 alone.
