Microsoft Favors Topological Qubits for Quantum Computing Advancements
Matthias Troyer, Vice President & Technical Fellow at Microsoft, discussed the primary pathways and economic realities associated with scaling quantum computing in an interview. The conversation highlighted the strengths of topological qubits, which are favored by Microsoft due to their ease of control at scale.
Troyer emphasized that the cost-effectiveness of quantum computing is a major challenge, citing DARPA's previous skepticism about the commercial value of quantum computing. However, he believes that with topological qubits, it is possible to achieve cost-effectiveness and reach utility scale within two to three years.
Neutral atoms are also seen as promising technology, with Microsoft partnering with Atom Computing to explore their potential. Troyer acknowledged that other technologies, such as transmons and spin qubits, have not been favored due to scalability concerns.
