Microsoft Files Patent for Ad-Filled Video Game Breaks
Microsoft has filed a patent application for a system that would show advertisements during video games without interrupting players at critical moments. The technology, described in the patent application published on September 3, uses machine learning and visual recognition to analyze gameplay.
The system would identify natural stopping points, such as the end of a game round or loading screen, and pause the game while an advertisement plays. In exchange for watching the promotional content, players could receive a 'credit' that allows them to continue playing for a set amount of time, up to one hour.
Credits could also be tied to in-game progress, such as completing a level or defeating a particular character. The system would delay advertisements during intense gameplay, such as battles or racing at high speed. Players could also be given control over the timing, with the option to choose when to watch promotional content.
The patent application lists Microsoft Technology Licensing LLC as the applicant and names Jared E. Henderson and six other inventors. Microsoft had not commented on the filing as of publication. It's worth noting that this is just a patent application, and it does not mean that Microsoft has announced plans to add the system to its games or consoles.
