Microsoft Files Patent for Ad-Interrupted Games
Microsoft is exploring an innovative way to insert ads into games on its Xbox and Windows platforms. The tech giant has filed a patent application that describes a system where gameplay time would be linked to a credit system.
According to the patent, users would initially receive credits for a certain period or game progress. These credits would eventually run out, prompting the game to pause and display ads before unlocking more playtime.
The system analyzes the current game state to determine the best moment to interrupt gameplay with an ad. This could be during loading screens, pause menus, completed missions, or the end of a level. The duration of a credit can vary, with examples including 60 minutes for tutorials and 20 minutes for online multiplayer sessions.
While Microsoft has filed this patent application, it's unclear whether the concept will ever become a reality. The company hasn't announced any plans to introduce ads in games on its Xbox, Windows, or Game Pass platforms.
