Microsoft has fixed a bug that was causing desktop settings to be lost or reset on some Windows devices after installing the KB5120998 August 2026 preview update.

The issue, which affected Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 systems, caused wallpaper to switch to a black background automatically. Users also reported that their mouse settings were changed or reset, making it impossible to restore the previous settings.

Microsoft confirmed last week that this bug was triggered after installing the KB5120998 preview update on affected devices. On Tuesday evening, after releasing this month's Patch Tuesday cumulative update, Microsoft said the issue has been fixed with the release of Windows updates (KB5124008) and later.
