Microsoft has fixed a bug that broke its built-in File History backup feature on millions of Windows 10 and Windows 11 machines. The company's support documentation confirmed the fix in updates released on or after September 22, 2026, including KB5124010.

The issue began with the September 8, 2026, Patch Tuesday rollout, where users started reporting problems with File History backups. Microsoft acknowledged the problem a day before BleepingComputer published its report on the bug.

Users experienced symptoms such as an incorrect 'Reconnect your drive' prompt and frozen timestamps in File History settings.
