Microsoft Fixes File History Backup Bug After September Security Updates

Microsoft has resolved an issue that was causing problems with its built-in File History backup feature on certain Windows systems after installing the September 2026 security updates.

The bug, which affected users running Windows 10 21H2 or later and Windows 11 23H2 and later, caused the automated backup feature to stop working and triggered application crash events in Event Viewer referencing FileHistory.exe and KERNELBASE.dll.

Users also experienced 'Reconnect your drive' alerts even though their compatible backup drives were connected and functioning properly. Previously backed-up files showed 'No previous version available,' and the 'Last Backup' timestamp did not update.

Microsfot fixed the issue for Windows 11 customers with this month's KB5124006 and KB5124010 optional cumulative updates, which rolled out on Tuesday. The fix is also included in next month's Patch Tuesday updates, set to roll out on October 13.
