Microsoft Fixes File History Backup Bug in September Updates

Microsoft has resolved an issue that prevented Windows systems from using File History to back up user files after installing the September security updates. The feature, which automatically saves account profiles and allows users to restore accidentally deleted or damaged files, stopped working on certain versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11.

According to a service alert seen by BleepingComputer, some users experienced application crash events in Event Viewer referencing FileHistory.exe and KERNELBASE.dll. Others saw 'Reconnect your drive' alerts despite having compatible backup drives connected.

The issue was fixed with the September preview update, which is available for Windows 11 customers as optional cumulative updates (KB5124006 and KB5124010). Users who don't want to install these updates will receive the fix in next month's Patch Tuesday updates on October 13.
