Microsoft Forces Users to Switch from Legacy Media Player

Microsoft has been pushing users to switch from Windows Media Player Legacy to its newer counterpart. The company's latest experimental build, released on August 17, disables captions in the older player and directs users to the modern version instead.

The new Media Player uses more than three times as much idle RAM compared to Legacy, which can be a significant issue for users with limited system resources. It also takes longer to open videos, making it less efficient overall.

Despite these drawbacks, the newer player does offer better caption customization options. However, this is not enough to justify disabling captions in the older version, especially since Legacy has its own set of advantages, including faster startup times and more familiar controls.

Fortunately, users don't have to choose between the two players. The free, open-source media player mpv is a suitable replacement for Windows Media Player Legacy, offering a minimalist interface, support for multiple media formats and subtitle types, and GPU-accelerated playback.
