Microsoft Hacked: $13M Follower Account Compromised for Meme Coin Scam
A high-profile hacking incident has unfolded on social media platform X after Microsoft's official account was compromised. The account, which boasts over 13 million followers, was used to promote an unofficial cryptocurrency token tied to Clippy, a character from Microsoft's old Office assistant.
The attackers replaced the account's profile picture with the paperclip character and briefly followed and reposted content from an account impersonating Clippy. One of the accounts involved even claimed that its liquidity pool was paired with Microsoft stock, or $MSFT.
However, Microsoft has since confirmed that it did not authorize or endorse any cryptocurrency connected to Clippy or MSFT. The company stated that it had removed posts that did not originate from them and is continuing to investigate the incident.
This hacking attempt resembles previous X account hijacking scams in which attackers used compromised high-profile profiles to promote meme coins, often generating significant trading volume before being exposed.
