Microsoft India Places 500 Employees on Performance Improvement Plans Amid AI Shift
Microsoft India is undergoing significant restructuring efforts, with approximately 500 employees placed on Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) amid growing scrutiny of roles and skills across the technology sector. This move comes as part of Microsoft's broader effort to improve efficiency while continuing to invest heavily in artificial intelligence.
The affected employees will undergo coaching or a PIP, which sets out specific areas for improvement, giving them a defined period to meet those expectations. The company also mentioned that those who do not meet role requirements can go through voluntary separation or termination.
According to Pareekh Jain, chief executive of market research firm EIIRTrend, around 2% of Microsoft India's workforce could be affected by the PIP exercise, equating to approximately 400-500 employees. However, it is essential to note that being placed on a PIP does not automatically mean losing one's job.
Microsoft's move highlights a tougher tech job market where performance, skills, and business relevance increasingly go hand in hand. The company is investing heavily in AI, cloud infrastructure, and data centers while facing pressure to improve efficiency and justify those investments.
