Microsoft Inks Long-Term PPA with Washington State Solar Project
Microsoft has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) for electricity from an 80 MW solar project in Washington, Ostrea Solar. The project, developed by Cypress Creek Energy, began commercial operations on September 2 and will supply Microsoft with renewable energy for up to 40 years.
The deal represents approximately $180 million in private investment and is expected to generate around $13.3 million in state and local taxes over its operating life. Ostrea Solar adds 104 megawatts of direct current capacity, equivalent to 80 MW of alternating current, to Washington's electricity system.
Cypress Creek Energy CEO Kevin Smith stated that the project will help meet the growing power demand driven by the technology sector in the state. The project connects to the Bonneville Power Administration transmission system and is expected to produce renewable energy associated with a specific generation asset, which is becoming increasingly important for companies facing scrutiny over the quality and additionality of their renewable energy procurement.
Microsoft's data center infrastructure has been expanding rapidly, leading to higher electricity use and reported emissions. The company has taken steps to address its environmental impact, including stopping the use of 'non-additional' unbundled renewable energy certificates. However, the scale of demand created by AI infrastructure remains a significant challenge for technology companies looking to procure clean power.
