Microsoft Integrates Office Tools with Revamped Copilot App

Microsoft has unveiled a revamped Copilot app that integrates AI chat, Office tools, and autonomous agents under one experience.

The new Copilot combines conversational AI, software development, and task management in three main areas: Home, Code, and Autopilot. The Home section brings together the standard Copilot chat interface with Cowork, allowing users to interact with Microsoft's AI through conversation while delegating tasks.

Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are integrated into the experience, making it easier for users to work on documents, spreadsheets, and presentations within a single environment. The Code section focuses on software development, using the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot, allowing users to build and manage software with AI assistance.

Autopilot is designed to handle tasks on behalf of users and continue working without requiring new instructions for every step. This feature marks a shift from conventional chatbot interactions towards agentic AI that can carry out multi-step activities. However, the rollout reflects Microsoft's cautious approach to expanding autonomous AI capabilities, with features like Autopilot currently only available through experimental releases or private preview.
