Microsoft Joins Apache Ossie Community to Advance Open Semantic Foundation
The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) has announced that Microsoft engineers have joined the Apache Ossie community, bringing their expertise in Power BI to help advance an open, interoperable semantic foundation for AI-driven analytics.
The addition of the initial Power BI Ossie converter allows organizations to convert between Power BI models and other Ossie-compatible semantic models using Ossie as an intermediate format. This move reflects growing community involvement across the ecosystem, with over 400 GitHub stars and participation from 48 organizations in just six months.
The Apache Ossie community is working towards establishing a vendor-neutral standard for semantic definitions that can be reused across platforms, reducing dependence on proprietary formats. The recent updates to the specification introduce Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) support as an Ossie-recognized query expression language, allowing complex measure logic defined in Microsoft environments to be represented in Ossie models.
The ASF welcomes Microsoft's engagement in Apache Ossie and encourages developers and data engineers to review the new converter codebase and participate in the ongoing development of the project. By reducing platform lock-in at the semantic layer, Apache Ossie aims to establish consistent definitions across lakehouses, BI tools, and applications.
