Microsoft Kills Desktop Publishing App After Three Decades

Microsoft is ending support for its desktop publishing app, Microsoft Publisher, in October 2026. The company will discontinue the service for Microsoft 365 subscribers on October 1 and cut off support for perpetual-license users on October 13.

The shutdown puts years of proprietary .pub archives at risk unless they are converted ahead of time. Teams are being pushed to export files to PDF or migrate to other tools such as Word, PowerPoint, or Affinity Publisher.

Publisher has been handling desktop publishing tasks since 1991, but its overlap with Word and newer design tools has become harder to justify. Microsoft's reasoning fits the broader direction of its productivity business: more cloud collaboration, more AI assistance, fewer niche desktop apps.

The real pressure point is the proprietary .pub format, which many other apps won't open cleanly if at all. This means businesses with years of brochures, menus, catalogs, or compliance documents parked on shared drives will need to audit and convert their files ahead of time.
