Microsoft Outshines IonQ as Quantum Computing Market Heats Up
IonQ and Microsoft are two companies making significant progress in quantum computing technology. While IonQ has accelerated its roadmap, its shares have struggled, declining 16.3% over the past three months. In contrast, Microsoft's shares have gained 36.5% during the same period.
IonQ's Superion 256 platform was launched in September, and the company raised its 2026 revenue outlook to $450-$460 million. However, IonQ is still loss-making, posting a $1.87 billion GAAP net loss in the second quarter. Microsoft, on the other hand, can fund its ambitious quantum program with substantial cash generation from its established businesses.
Microsoft's Majorana 2 program aims to build a scalable quantum computer, targeting a system by 2029. The company has begun providing Majorana 2 technology to DARPA for on-site testing at its new Maryland quantum research center.
The valuation gap between the two companies remains significant, with IonQ trading at a steep premium of 23.19X F12M price-to-sales multiple, while Microsoft trades at 9.29X F12M sales.
