Microsoft Passes on Low-Cost Surface Laptops
Microsoft has no plans to create a Surface-branded laptop that competes directly with Apple's MacBook Neo, according to CVP Brett Ostrum. Speaking at the Snapdragon Summit, Ostrum explained that Microsoft doesn't think it needs to enter this space because OEMs like Dell and ASUS are already offering competitive options.
Ostrum cited the example of the Dell XPS 13, which starts at $799, as a device that meets customer needs in the lower price range. He also mentioned that Surface is focused on competing at the high end with devices like the Surface Laptop Ultra, which will be showcased on October 7.
Much of Microsoft's current focus is on its premium Surface PC lineup, which includes three distinct categories: Entry Premium, Premium, and Ultra Premium. The company appears to have shifted its strategy towards emphasizing quality over affordability, at least for now.
