Microsoft Patent Proposes Ad-Interrupted Gameplay for Uninterrupted Play
A new patent application from Microsoft has sparked controversy among gamers and industry experts. The application describes a system that would interrupt gameplay to show ads in exchange for extra uninterrupted playtime.
The patent, titled 'Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access,' was filed by Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLC on September 3, 2026. According to the filing, the system would detect natural breaks in gameplay and offer promotional content in exchange for credits that unlock more ad-free access.
The proposed system would grant credits based on two tracks: time-based and progress-based. Time-based credits would award a fixed block of ad-free access after a player sits through an ad, while progress-based credits would tie rewards to measurable chunks of progress, such as completing rounds or levels.
