Microsoft Patents System to Insert Ads into Video Games
Microsoft has patented a system to insert ads into video games while players are in the middle of gameplay. The 'ad credit' system would use signals from the game engine to determine the best time to display paid promotional material.
The system would stop the game temporarily to serve either a video ad or static image, and then resume play after a short delay. This would occur during predictable moments in the game, such as loading screens or boss fights.
According to the patent application, this system is intended for free-to-play games on Xbox and PC, but it may eventually be expanded to paid titles as well. The technology could potentially generate revenue for game developers through targeted advertising.
