Microsoft Pins Game Crashes on RGB Peripherals, Offers Registry Workaround

Microsoft has identified the cause of recent Windows 11 game crashes as RGB peripherals and components, specifically drivers or code components with file names similar to inpoutx64. The issue was first reported after the August 11 Patch Tuesday rollup and affects games such as ARC Raiders, MARVEL Tokon: Fighting Souls, and The Finals on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2.

The culprit behind the crashes is an old signed driver, inpoutx64.sys, which has been shipped alongside RGB and monitoring software for years. Microsoft warns that disabling the driver can break RGB functionality on peripherals or the controlling software, forcing users to choose between working games or working lighting.

A temporary workaround is available through a registry edit: setting the Start value to 4 in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/system/currentcontrolset/services/inpoutx64 and rebooting. Microsoft advises against rolling back the update, which closed over 400 vulnerabilities including one under active exploitation and two publicly disclosed zero-days.

Microsoft is still investigating the relationship between RGB components and games that trigger the issue, and is asking affected players to file feedback through the Feedback Hub.
