Microsoft is actively encouraging Xbox owners to trade in their unused consoles, as the company looks to boost supply amid ongoing RAM shortages. The tech giant has begun emailing select users, offering them the chance to trade in their Xbox Series X or S consoles through Best Buy. The emails, which ask, "Haven't played on your console in a while?", promote a trade-in deal that can fetch up to $375 in Best Buy store credit for a Series X in good condition.
Best Buy's trade-in program currently lists $375 as the top offer for a Series X console, provided it comes with a working controller, power cord, and docking station. However, selling the console privately, such as through eBay, could yield a higher return, especially when including additional accessories.
The push to trade in consoles comes as Microsoft faces persistent RAM shortages, which have led to console stock shortages and price hikes. The company raised prices in June, following an earlier increase in October. By encouraging users to trade in their unused consoles, Microsoft aims to keep more devices in active use, potentially benefiting from Game Pass subscriptions and digital sales.
Microsoft's partnership with Best Buy appears strategic, as the retailer's extensive network of physical stores makes the trade-in process more convenient for a broader audience. While Microsoft operates its own trade-in and refurbished console programs, the collaboration with Best Buy may help reach a wider consumer base beyond dedicated gamers.
