Microsoft Puts Educator Control at Center of AI Efforts in Education
Microsoft has been committed to education for five decades, and its latest efforts focus on harnessing the power of AI while ensuring student safety and educator control.
The company recognizes that AI can both enhance learning and introduce risks, such as cognitive offloading, where students rely too heavily on machines rather than doing their own thinking.
To mitigate these concerns, Microsoft has established five guiding principles for AI in education:
Firstly, safety, privacy, security, and transparency by design are essential. This means that every AI system used in education should be designed with robust safeguards to protect student data and reduce risk.
Microsoft has signed an agreement with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and introduced a new Privacy & Safety Standard for Schools covering Microsoft Education products, which limits how student and educator data can be used and requires human oversight for consequential decisions.
Secondly, educators should remain at the center of teaching and learning, using AI to augment their expertise rather than replace it. Educators are involved in designing AI systems and receive training on how to use them effectively.
Microsoft's education-first AI experience, Teach, is designed around real instructional workflows, helping educators adapt materials for different learners and build lessons that meet their standards.
Thirdly, AI should be designed to support students' learning, not replace it. Microsoft's AI experiences in education are age-appropriate by design, with default-off access to Copilot Chat for K-12 students and administrator controls for enabling as learners progress.
Fourthly, AI can strengthen education systems by supporting students sooner, reducing paperwork, and using information more effectively. Broward County Public Schools deployed Microsoft 365 Copilot integrated with its ecosystem, producing real-time insights that helped the district overcome a significant budget shortfall.
Lastly, every student should be prepared for an AI-powered future. Through Microsoft Elevate for Educators, educators receive practical training, communities of practice, and in-demand credentials to build their understanding and confidence when teaching about AI effectively and responsibly.
