Microsoft Reassures Students: Learning to Code Still Worth It Amid AI-Generated Code Boom
Microsoft has dropped a bombshell for students wondering if learning to code is still worth it. The company's official training and certification arm, Microsoft Learn, made a statement on X that says, 'If you're wondering whether it's still worth learning how to code, the answer is: Now more than ever.'
The message from Microsoft comes at a time when AI-generated code has become increasingly common in the tech industry. According to Google's Sundar Pichai, 75% of all new code at the company is now AI-generated and approved by engineers. Anthropic puts its own figure above 90%. This means that while AI can write code efficiently, it lacks the ability to know what to build, spot potential problems, or take responsibility when something goes wrong.
Microsoft argues that human coders are still essential for reviewing and directing AI-generated code. The bottleneck may have shifted from typing code to judging its quality. Understanding systems, reading unfamiliar code, and directing AI tools effectively are now the key skills required in the industry.
