Microsoft Reveals Azure Cloud Sales Amid Cloud Computing Boom
Microsoft has made a significant move in its financial reporting by revealing Azure cloud sales on a quarterly basis. This change provides investors and analysts with more detailed information about the company's performance in the cloud computing market, which is experiencing rapid growth due to the increasing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and data centers.
According to Microsoft, its Azure cloud computing unit generated US$29.4 billion in sales during the most recently ended quarter, placing it behind Amazon but ahead of Alphabet's Google. In the fiscal year that ended on June 30, Azure reported US$101.9 billion in sales. These figures are significant as they provide a direct comparison with Microsoft's top rivals in the market.
Microsoft has also updated its quarterly forecast for Azure revenue, slightly lowering it due to changes in how some sales from GitHub, its code-hosting service, are grouped. However, the company's overall current quarter outlook remains unchanged. The change in reporting segments is part of Microsoft's effort to provide more transparency and clarity about its performance in the cloud computing market.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that AI represents a profound shift in both technology and business, changing what they build and how they operate. He also stated that it blurs the boundaries between products and reshapes business models. Microsoft shares rose by 1.4% after the company disclosed the change.
