Microsoft Shields Student Data from AI Training

Microsoft has rolled out new safeguards for using artificial intelligence (AI) in schools. The tech giant has implemented its AI Safety and Privacy Standard, effective November 1st, following an agreement with the United Federation of Teachers.

The new standard sets enforceable guidelines for how AI is used in educational settings. One key protection is that student and educator data will not be used to train AI models or sold to advertising agencies.

Families will also receive more information on how AI is being used, including the safeguards in place and what data is collected. The agreement aims to give schools control over their data and provide transparency for parents.

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, stated that the agreement ensures 'three foundational goals: protect the privacy and data of children, give schools real control over AI tools in the classroom, and provide transparency and information to parents.'
