Microsoft Silent on Data Center Proposal from Indiana Faith Groups
A coalition of Indiana faith communities has proposed a binding agreement to Microsoft regarding its planned data center in Granger, Indiana. The proposal asks for 1 cent on every dollar of project costs, which could generate approximately $30 million to $40 million annually for community programs.
The group, known as We Make Indiana, submitted the Fair Share Agreement proposal to Microsoft in May 2026. The agreement would be legally enforceable and governed by an independent community board rather than the company itself.
MaryAnn Tobin, a spokesperson for We Make Indiana, stated that the coalition is not trying to stop the data center project but wants a fair share of its costs. 'It's about who bears responsibility for what comes with one,' she said.
Microsoft has yet to commit to the agreement, stating that investment decisions have not been finalized and it is still engaging other community leaders. The company has supported voluntary initiatives in the area, including education programs and digital-skills training.
