Microsoft Slashes Cloud Gaming Limits Amid AI Infrastructure Crunch
Microsoft has announced that it is ending its unlimited cloud gaming benefit for Xbox Game Pass subscribers and introducing monthly time limits. The change will take effect in November, with the Essential tier capped at 5 hours per month, Premium at 10 hours, and Ultimate at 15 hours.
The move follows Amazon's decision to discontinue individual game sales and third-party subscription sales on its cloud gaming service Amazon Luna in April. Microsoft stated that the cost of delivering the service increases as users spend more time playing games in sessions.
Cloud gaming requires continuous occupancy of data center computing resources, which has become a significant challenge due to the surge in demand driven by generative AI. Big tech companies are prioritizing AI-centric resource allocation strategies, making cloud gaming a limited and supplementary service role.
