Microsoft Soars as Nvidia Struggles Amid AI Infrastructure Uncertainty
July was a striking reminder that market stability can hide major opportunities and risks beneath its surface. While the S&P500 moved only modestly, some of the most actively traded US stocks experienced significant swings.
Microsoft emerged as the standout performer, gaining 24.76% in July after releasing fiscal fourth-quarter results that exceeded expectations. The tech giant's cloud division, Azure, crossed $100 billion in annual revenue for the first time and grew over 40% in a quarter, addressing market concerns about AI infrastructure spending.
Nvidia, on the other hand, had a subdued month with a gain of just 0.64%. Despite its year-to-date performance lagging behind recent history, the chipmaker's underlying growth drivers remain intact, particularly with hyperscaler capital expenditure on AI infrastructure continuing to expand.
However, Micron and Tesla suffered sharp reversals, plunging 28.44% and falling 26.01%, respectively. The pullback in Micron was driven by a crowded, momentum-driven trade unwinding, while concerns over capital expenditure overshadowed record deliveries for Tesla.
