Microsoft Soars Past S&P 500 as Cloud Computing Fuels Growth
Microsoft's steady growth in cloud computing has been driving its revenue higher, and it's showing no signs of slowing down. The company's cloud segment accounted for two-thirds of its revenue in its fiscal 2026 Q4, with a 27% year-over-year increase.
This is largely due to the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) in enterprise environments, which has boosted cloud platform adoption across the industry. Microsoft Cloud offers over 11,000 models, providing customers with flexibility and choice when selecting their AI solutions.
While some might argue that Amazon and Alphabet are major competitors in this space, Microsoft's high growth rates and established customer base give it a significant advantage. Additionally, its recurring revenue model ensures that as its customers' needs evolve, they will need to upgrade their plans, which is cumbersome and often not worth the effort to switch platforms.
Microsoft also reported strong growth in other segments, such as LinkedIn (up 12% year-over-year), online advertising revenue (up 10%), and Microsoft 365 commercial cloud revenue (up 16%). While its 'more personal computing' segment was down 4%, it represented only 14.3% of total sales.
