The US-China AI rivalry has taken a new turn as Microsoft comes out in support of Chinese open-source AI, contradicting the stance of big US AI companies like Anthropic and OpenAI.

The argument over whether the US or China will lead the world in AI has been ongoing for years, with some claiming that Chinese AI poses a security risk due to its potential use by the Chinese government for censorship and data theft.

However, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella disagrees, stating that open-weight models are essential to a healthy AI ecosystem and will 'strengthen American competitiveness and expand economic opportunity, while protecting national security.'

Microsoft has begun offering Chinese lightweight open-source AI to its customers through Azure, and is testing it with Copilot Cowork agentic AI product.
