Microsoft Stock Rises as $678 Billion Backlog Fuels AI Demand
Microsoft's stock price rose by approximately 0.6% to $484.30 on Wednesday morning, driven in part by falling Treasury yields that pulled buyers back into mega-cap technology.
The real story behind Microsoft's performance, however, is the company's massive backlog of contracted business. This backlog has grown to over $678 billion, which represents more than two years' worth of annual revenue for the company.
Azure, Microsoft's cloud-services platform, is a key driver of this growth, with revenue surging 43% and annual Azure revenue blasting through $100 billion for the first time. The commercial backlog has exploded by 84%, with customers committing hundreds of billions of dollars to Microsoft's ecosystem.
This surge in demand presents both opportunities and challenges for Microsoft. While the company is not yet aggressively investing in AI infrastructure, it must still build enough capacity to meet the growing needs of its customers without compromising profitability.
