Microsoft Stock Surges as Capacity Allocation Decisions Pay Off

Microsoft's stock has experienced significant growth since mid-June 2026, returning about 32% over that period. This outpaces both the S&P 500 and peers Alphabet and Apple, which fell 4.5% and returned 14%, respectively.

The strong performance can be attributed to internal capacity allocation decisions made by Microsoft. In October 2025, management stated that Azure's growth was constrained due to available server and GPU capacity being prioritized for first-party enterprise applications over external Azure workloads.

In January 2026, Microsoft reiterated this point, saying that had the GPUs installed in fiscal Q1 and Q2 2026 gone to Azure, the reported growth rate would have been higher. The company's own applications, particularly Microsoft 365 Copilot, were receiving priority treatment, with the product passing 20 million paid seats by April 29, 2026.

As the options market indicated a large move in either direction, the signs were not what filled the news before the run began. On June 15 and 16, 2026, law firms publicized a class action and investigations into the January 28, 2026 results.
