Microsoft Surface Laptop 15 Gen 8 Storage Performance Reviewed
The latest review of the Microsoft Surface Laptop 15 Gen 8 highlights its performance capabilities, particularly in storage speed. The laptop uses an SK hynix PVC10 HFS256GEM4X182N SSD, which delivered mixed results in benchmarks. In sequential read speeds, it achieved 2,249 MB/s, outperforming the average of its class (2,764 MB/s) but lagging behind competitors like the Lenovo ThinkPad X9-15p Gen 1 with its Samsung PM9E1 SSD, which reached 7,663 MB/s. Similarly, in sequential write speeds, the Surface Laptop 15 Gen 8 scored 1,747 MB/s, below the class average of 3,319 MB/s.
The DiskSpd benchmark further revealed disparities. While the Surface Laptop 15 Gen 8 managed 6,122 MB/s in sequential multi-threaded reads, it trailed significantly in 4K random read and write tests, scoring 64.4 MB/s and 150.9 MB/s respectively. These results place it behind high performers like the Dell XPS 16 Core Ultra X7 358H and the Asus Zenbook A16 UX3607, which demonstrated superior storage performance in multiple categories.
The review also compared the Surface Laptop 15 Gen 8 against its predecessor, the Surface Laptop 7 15 Lunar Lake, noting that the newer model offered marginal improvements in some areas but still fell short of the top-tier devices. Overall, the Surface Laptop 15 Gen 8's storage performance is solid but not class-leading, making it a reliable but not exceptional choice for demanding users.
