Microsoft Taps Biomimicry for Data Center Design
Microsoft is revamping its data center development process to include 'nature-inspired' campus designs that restore and enhance natural ecosystems. The tech giant says it's updating its approach after implementing biomimicry principles in a Netherlands-based campus in 2022.
The new initiative will apply biomimicry at over 20 existing data centers across the US and Germany, as well as all new projects in the US. This approach combines ecological research with community feedback to create customized designs that reflect local ecosystems.
According to Kaitlin Chuzi, director of Global Land Strategy at Microsoft, each location will receive a tailored solution rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. 'What works well in the Netherlands is not the same as what's going to make sense in Phoenix or Wisconsin,' she explains.
The initiative aims to address community pushback against data center development, which has been a growing concern nationwide. Many communities are worried about the impact of these projects on local resources such as water and power.
