Microsoft and SMRU Consulting are teaming up to develop technology that helps conserve orca populations using AI-powered bioacoustic sensors. The collaboration aims to protect marine life by reducing underwater noise pollution caused by shipping activities.

The Communication Acoustics Buoy (CAB) is a floating platform equipped with solar panels, hydrophones, and edge computing capabilities. It captures the diverse soundscape of the ocean, allowing researchers to identify patterns and automatically classify calls received from orcas.

The AI model used in this technology classifies whale calls and sends real-time information to ships operating in the area, enabling them to adjust their speed and course when marine life is near. This approach has the potential to protect vulnerable species across global oceans.
