Microsoft to discontinue text and call 2FA options for MTSU services
Microsoft is updating its Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) options, prompting Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) to notify its community of the changes. Effective February 1, 2027, text messages and phone calls will no longer be available as 2FA methods for accessing university services like Pipeline, Canvas, and MTMail. The shift is part of a global security overhaul by Microsoft, as outlined in an email from MTSU’s Information and Technology Division.
Users are encouraged to switch to alternative 2FA methods before November 1 to avoid login issues. The Microsoft Authenticator app remains an option, along with passkeys that use facial recognition or fingerprint scans on approved devices. Hardware Security Keys, priced between $29 and $58 before fees, are another alternative, though they require an additional purchase.
To assist with the transition, MTSU’s ITD will set up help booths across campus from October 5 through November 13. Support will be available at various locations, including the Student Union, Smith Hall, and Corlew Hall on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and at Monohan Hall, Scarlett Commons, and the KUC on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Hours for these sessions are from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. daily.
For further assistance, users can contact MTSU ITD by calling (615) 898-5345 or emailing [email protected]. Additional details are available on the MTSU Sidelines website, and updates can be followed on their social media platforms.
