Microsoft to End Office 2021 Support Without Extensions
Microsoft is set to end support for Office 2021 on October 13, 2026, with no extensions or additional security updates offered. This decision marks a significant shift from how Microsoft handled Windows 10, where home users received an extra year of free security updates. According to Microsoft, users of Office 2021 will no longer receive technical support, bug fixes, or security updates after the cutoff date, leaving them vulnerable to serious security risks. The company advises users to upgrade to a newer version of Office to stay protected.
Office 2021 users, both consumers and businesses, will still be able to use the software after the end of support, but they will face heightened security risks. Microsoft recommends upgrading to Office 365 for continuous updates and security patches. For business users, Microsoft suggests moving to Microsoft 365 Apps or the latest on-premises version, Office LTSC 2024, to remain in a supported environment. Accrued Consulting, an independent Microsoft 365 consulting firm, warns that unpatched Office clients pose significant security risks and compliance issues.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has emphasized the benefits of subscription-based models, noting that subscriptions provide easier budgeting and forecasting. He also hinted at future changes to the subscription model due to the rising costs associated with artificial intelligence (AI). The shift away from perpetual licenses to subscriptions aligns with Microsoft's strategy to generate recurring revenue.
