Microsoft Unifies Copilot Apps for Work and Personal Accounts
Microsoft is streamlining its Copilot app experience for both personal and work accounts. The company announced it's unifying its separate consumer and Microsoft 365 Copilot apps into a single app that will support both account types. This change affects the existing Microsoft Copilot app, which will be upgraded to the new unified version in the coming days.
The Microsoft 365 Copilot app is also being updated and rebranded as 'Microsoft Copilot app.' It will continue to support personal Microsoft accounts and Microsoft Entra accounts, with each account type activating a different background color. This looks similar to how Microsoft combined its two Teams apps on Windows 11 into a single app for both personal and work accounts.
The new unified Copilot app will have an account switcher to separate the work and personal experiences. Consumers using the existing Microsoft Copilot app will get free access to Copilot Chat, which is currently only available with select Microsoft 365 business subscriptions. This change brings back functionality similar to the original Office app, which allowed users to create new documents and edit existing ones.
The transition to the new Copilot app will be a gradual process starting this week for Windows Insiders. The company said that more features will be revealed soon, but this milestone marks the beginning of the change. On mobile, consumers using the existing Microsoft Copilot app will need to download the new unified version later this month, while Microsoft 365 Copilot users will see navigation changes and a new app icon.
