Microsoft has announced the general availability of Azure Enclave, a managed service designed to simplify the deployment and management of isolated cloud environments for sensitive workloads. Available in both standard Azure and Azure for US Government, the service helps organizations streamline the handling of classified and special access program missions, particularly for government agencies and the Defense Industrial Base (DIB).
Azure Enclave leverages a community-and-enclave model, where a community provides shared network controls while each enclave offers an isolated workload boundary. This approach allows agencies and partners to collaborate across organizational boundaries with strong access, connectivity, and monitoring controls. The service reduces the need for custom isolation architectures for every workload, providing a repeatable foundation for mission success.
The service is built around a defense-in-depth approach, featuring virtual networking isolation, explicit connection management, and Azure Policy governance. Centralized logging and observability tools, such as Microsoft Sentinel, enhance monitoring and security alerts. Azure Enclave complements existing security and compliance programs, with accreditation efforts underway for FedRAMP, DoD Impact Levels 4-6, and Intelligence Community environments.
Beyond government use, Azure Enclave is also applicable to highly regulated industries like healthcare, finance, and research, where sensitive data collaboration is essential. Organizations can start with focused deployments and expand as needed, maintaining consistent isolation and governance controls.
