Microsoft Unveils Surface Laptop Ultra and AI Capabilities at October 7 Event
Microsoft is set to host a special event in San Francisco on October 7, focusing on Windows, RTX Spark, and Surface. The company has remained tight-lipped about specific details, but expectations are high following the mixed reception of the Copilot+ PC launch earlier in 2024. This event will be livestreamed, indicating significant announcements are planned.
A major highlight will be the Surface Laptop Ultra, which was first unveiled in June. Microsoft is expected to provide more details about its hardware capabilities, including its ability to run local 120B parameter models for on-device AI experiences without relying on the cloud. The laptop is aimed at AI developers and content creators who use apps like Premiere Pro and Blender. Key features include a high-performance display, a large haptic trackpad, and a unique USB-C port design.
The Surface Laptop Ultra will come in two RTX Spark configurations: an 18-core model with 5,120 GPU cores and a 20-core model with 6,144 GPU cores. RAM options range from 24GB to 128GB, with pricing likely starting well above $2,000 for the entry-level model. Microsoft may also reveal the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box around the same time.
Additionally, Microsoft will discuss new agentic capabilities in Windows 11, including support for local and secure agentic workflows. The company has been working on integrating AI models like Aion Instruct, Aion Plan, and MAI Code Flash, which are designed to run entirely on-device. There may also be a reveal of a new voice-enhanced user experience for Windows.
