A software developer on GitHub has successfully ported Microsoft Word 1.1a to run natively on Windows 11, showcasing the operating system's impressive backward compatibility.

The project, led by JMarshall23, uses the application's original source code and tools from 2014, when it was made public by the Computer History Museum.

To adapt the software for modern systems, the developer replaced outdated code with equivalent functionality that meets current standards. This includes replacing 16-bit assembly code and segmented memory management.

The package contains over 1,000 files across 33 folders, weighing in at around 7 MB.
