A developer has successfully ported Microsoft Word for Windows 1.1a to x64, making it possible to run natively on Windows 11 PC systems.

JMarshall23, the developer behind this project, used original Word source and resources along with modern replacements for 16-bit assembly, segmented-memory, and Win16 platform boundaries.

This release of Word marked a significant milestone in the word processing market, as it introduced WYSIWYG editing, graphics, and table insertion on Windows.

Microsoft permitted its source code to be released in full, which can still be obtained via the Computer History Museum (CHM).
