Microsoft X Account Hijacked by Crypto Scammers Using Clippy Theme
Microsoft's official X account was compromised by crypto scammers on Thursday. The attackers used the account to promote a Clippy-themed cryptocurrency, @clippymsftcto, which has since been suspended.
The scammers posted a message from Microsoft's profile, sharing one of the crypto account's messages and replacing the profile picture with an image of Clippy. This was done in an attempt to amplify the crypto account's reach, particularly among Microsoft's 13 million followers on X.
A second account involved in the incident continued to promote the $Clippy token, claiming its liquidity pool was paired with $MSFT.
Microsoft has stated that it does not support or endorse any cryptocurrency or crypto-related token. The company confirmed unauthorized access to its account and removed the posts, but did not provide details on how the attackers gained access.
