Microsoft's $650M Inflection AI Deal Wasn't an Acquisition
Inflection AI, an independent company specializing in artificial intelligence (AI), recently made headlines after its arrangement with Microsoft. According to Dealroom, Microsoft's March 2024 deal worth approximately $650M was initially misclassified as a company acquisition.
The primary record shows that Microsoft did not acquire Inflection AI but rather hired the company's CEO, Mustafa Suleyman, and co-founder Karén Simonyan, along with most of its staff. The technology giant paid around $650M primarily for a non-exclusive licence to use Inflection's technology, as well as hiring-related waivers.
This arrangement did not involve the purchase of the company, and Inflection AI continued to operate independently. By 2025, CEO Sean White described the firm as still independent and pivoting towards enterprise AI.
