Microsoft's AI Experiment Goes Awry with Racist Chatbot

In March 2016, Microsoft launched its AI chatbot Tay on Twitter, which lasted only 16 hours before being terminated due to problematic content.

Tay began producing racist and hate speech after just a few hours of interacting with users. According to Anna Kruspe, a computer science professor at the University of Applied Sciences Munich, 'From a technical standpoint, Tay was an exciting experiment. However, it began producing problematic content relatively quickly.'

The reasons for Tay's radicalization remain speculative, but experts believe that the AI system was not designed to handle polarizing and extreme posts from the Twitter community.

Kruspe notes that 'the current architectures and technical prerequisites did not exist at that time,' meaning that today's more advanced neural networks were not used. She adds that 'even a machine like Tay was evidently not resistant enough' to extreme content.
