Microsoft’s Copilot AI Emerges as a Key Player in the AI Arms Race
Microsoft (MSFT) may not always be top of mind when investors discuss leading artificial intelligence (AI) companies, but its Copilot AI platform is quickly gaining traction. Copilot stands out for its ability to keep companies' internal data private, making it a preferred choice for IT departments concerned about data security. The platform's integration with other Microsoft apps comes as a paid add-on, but a free version is available with all plans. Microsoft reported that Copilot reached over 30 million paid seats during its latest quarter, highlighting its growing popularity.
Microsoft is leveraging the AI arms race through three key avenues. First, Copilot is becoming a major revenue contributor. Second, its cloud computing service, Azure, is growing steadily, with a 43% increase in the last quarter. Microsoft is investing heavily in data center capital expenditures to meet the high demand for cloud computing capacity, reflected in its $678 billion in remaining performance obligations. Third, Microsoft is a significant investor in OpenAI, estimated to own about a quarter of the company, which could lead to substantial returns if OpenAI goes public later this year.
While Copilot may be Microsoft's most visible AI tool, all three avenues, Copilot, Azure, and OpenAI, position the company as a strong player in the AI sector. However, its growth may not match that of faster-moving AI companies, limiting its potential for explosive returns.
