Microsoft's Data Center Capacity to Leap 300% by 2032
Microsoft's data center capacity is rapidly expanding to meet growing demand for cloud and AI services. The tech giant plans to increase its capacity from 12 gigawatts to 38 gigawatts by 2032, a leap that will surpass the electricity consumption of New York State during peak demand periods.
The move comes as Microsoft faces significant computing power shortages, which have hindered its ability to deliver cloud and AI services. The company's decision to pause some data center development in early 2025 exacerbated the problem, leading to a lack of available servers and prompting customers to seek out alternative providers.
Competitors such as Google, Amazon, and Meta are also investing heavily in data centers to meet demand, committing nearly $2.4 trillion over the coming years. Microsoft's capital expenditure reached $145 billion in its most recent fiscal year, and analysts expect this spending to continue growing.
