Microsoft's Hidden AI Moat
Microsoft's artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities are often overlooked by investors who view the company as just a software giant, but this perception is changing. The company has built one of the strongest AI moats in the market, which makes it an attractive buy.
The numbers support this underrepresented view. In fiscal 2026, Microsoft delivered about $331 billion in revenue, with growth driven by demand across Azure and its cloud applications. Data from the latest quarter showed Azure and other cloud services revenue up around 40% year over year, beating analyst expectations near 40%. This growth is now closely tied to AI, not just generic compute.
What gives Microsoft an AI moat is where the AI lives. The company has more than 450 million commercial Microsoft 365 users, with Copilot sitting inside that base. Paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats have crossed 30 million, with large customers rolling the product out across their workforces. Each Copilot subscription rides on top of existing Office licenses, making AI a feature of daily work.
Microsoft's AI run rate number makes this concrete. In its third quarter call, the company said its AI business had reached a $37 billion annual revenue run rate, up 123% from a year earlier. This includes Azure AI services, Copilot for Office and GitHub, and other AI offerings.
