Microsoft's IE Retirement Countdown Begins
Microsoft is finally putting Internet Explorer out of its misery by 2029. The company's reminder to organizations comes as they still rely on IE Mode, a compatibility solution based on Google's Chromium browser engine. Although support for Internet Explorer 11 was retired in 2015, the legacy technology has lingered through IE Mode in modern Windows releases.
Much like Microsoft announced in 2021, Internet Explorer (IE) mode in Microsoft Edge will be supported 'at least' until the end of 2029. Redmond is urging IT admins to properly plan for the migration of their company's legacy applets and applications that still require Internet Explorer/IE Mode.
The warning comes as some organizations may need years to complete modernization efforts, which might take significant time. Microsoft is pushing out deprecation reminders, such as MC1473151, to remind them of the impending change.
