Microsoft's Official X Account Hijacked for Fake Clippy Cryptocurrency
The official X account of tech giant Microsoft was recently hijacked to promote a fraudulent cryptocurrency tied to Clippy, the company's famous virtual assistant.
The attacker posted about the so-called $Clippy token and promised that if it gained 500,000 likes, Microsoft would bring back Clippy. This was likely meant to tap into users' nostalgia for the paperclip character.
The campaign was cleverly designed to confuse social media followers, with even Microsoft's apology appearing fake at first.
This is not the first time Microsoft's X accounts have been targeted by attackers. In June 2024, the company's India account was hacked to promote a GameStop cryptocurrency pre-sale.
